Review of Radiosurgery written by a patient
18th July 2020

The staff at The Royal Marsden in Chelsea were exceptional in managing my 3 days of Cyberknife treatment. Under the Covid restrictions, from ensuring my and others safety with masks and hand sanitisation, the Cyberknife team were professional and most re-assuring. Explanations and opportunities to ask questions about my treatment were clear and they always ensured that I knew what to expect at all times. Though I did not receive a letter appointment, I did get a phone call to advise my appointment would be the following day - short notice, but then at least treatment was getting under way quickly. As long as the patient can be adaptable to appointment time changes to help the team manage their the busy schedule of appointments, then it all contributes to re-assure the patient

Review of Radiotherapy Chelsea written by a patient

The level of care I received from the radiotherapy team was outstanding in every respect. Even if I wanted to, even if I was deliberately looking for some way to fault the service provided by this department, I literally couldn't! Everyone was polite and professional, the treatments were carried out on time and with full respect and dignity afforded to me. Cancer is bloody awful, but honestly dealing with good people such as yourselves makes it somehow bearable, thank you so much. You are amazing!

Runs like clockwork, from my first planning appointment and through the following radiotherapy sessions. All the staff I met at the Marsden were lovely, the Wallace wing radiotherapy receptionists were so kind and it was much appreciated in these uncertain times. I can't think of any improvements you could make to this excellent NHS service!

I was treated very well and have only a couple of minor complaints. In Intensive care: just out of surgery (night of 1/6). Needed to urinate. Given a cardboard pan: not a commode..tried to prop it on the bed with obvious results:spillage. All this was watched by the nurse. Morning, new nurse, commode appears. // Day ward (Ellis Ward: 2 - 6/6): Great care, very personal. One glaring problem: Urine, and once, faecal samples were left to fester in cardboard pans for hours, sometimes overnight, even for more than a day in 1 case. My first day, not only were there 2 fragrant pans of wee in the bathroom for the day, but the loo was dirty (faecal spray). After mentioning this twice I ended up cleaning it myself. Patients are supposed to pull the bell to notify nurses pans are there to collect. Maybe they do/don't. But this was a consistent problem over the 4 days I was there (June 2 - 6) Nurses PPE wasted as they collect and dispose of the pans without knowing whose they are, waste of the pans. Otherwise, wards clean, treatment great.

The absolutely genuine care and interest shown by the nurses at the Royal Marsden is just exceptional. Nothing is too much and they always take the time to answer questions in a clear understandable way.

Six weeks worth of daily treatment is daunting. The three hour daily return travelling time equally so. BUT the whole process has proved an eye opener in how to receive outstanding care. All the staff involved have become personal friends. They include but are not exclusive to, Dorothy on reception with her welcoming smile and helpful attitude, Karen and Melanie and their team who have been brilliant. All of whom have been professional when they needed to be but fun when they didn't need to be. I wish them all well. The security team at the door have also been friendly and welcoming. Last, but certainly not least, Fatima whose only job in life is to keep the lavatories clean. Not most people's career choice but she did/does it in style. Filled with good humour. A big thank you to them all.
